Kakadu National Park – Road and Access Report 30 July 2014

PLEASE NOTE:

There have been buffalo sightings in the Mary River Region, please drive with care.

Park rangers have commenced their annual fire management activities for the dry season. Smoke associated with these activities may be encountered while traveling through the park on major roads. Please drive with care and observe any safety signage at this time, and be on the lookout for wildlife near roads.

Drivers should be aware of the potential presence of crocodiles in water crossings in Kakadu National Park — Do not enter the water and stay inside the vehicle at all times while crossing water bodies in vehicles.

Check out Gubara (unsealed road), a 6km return walk past sandstone cliffs to shady monsoon forest pools. A pleasant place to spend the heat of the day! Please observe waring signage.

Aboriginal rock art fan?  Take the 3.4 km return walk to Nanguluwur art site!  This quiet site is an easy walk through woodlands and a must for those seeking out amazing rock art.

Arnhem Highway Open Please note there are currently roadworks in various sections between Bark Hut Inn and Humpty Doo. Motorists are advised to heed all traffic control.
Kakadu Highway Open Please note there is no fuel available at Goymarr Road House, you can purchase fuel in Pine Creek or Cooinda Lodge. There have been buffalo sightings on the highway at the southern end of the park, please drive with care.
Old Jim Jim Road Open 4WD high clearance only due to water over road at South Alligator Crossing.

Mamukala wetlands Open Bird Hide and 3km walk open.
Gungarre Walk Open
Red Lily Billabong Open Access from Red Lily to Bucket Billabong from the northern entrance is restricted to high clearance 4WD as the creek crossing is currently at 0.4m.
Bucket Billabong Open Access from Bucket Billabong to Red Lily from the southern entrance is restricted to high clearance 4WD as the creek crossing is currently at 0.4m.
Alligator Billabong Open
2 Mile Hole Billabong Open 1st creek crossing is dry, 2nd creek crossing is currently at 0.4m.  High clearance 4WD recommended.
4 Mile Hole Billabong Open 1st creek crossing is dry, 2nd creek crossing is currently at 0.4m.  High clearance 4WD recommended. Exercise extreme care as 4 Mile Hole is a crocodile habitat.
West Alligator Head Closed Seasonal closure, rangers now on site commencing pre-opening works.
